The groundbreaking of the 28th Street Apartments, a historic building designed in 1926, took place today.
The restored building will include a rehabilitation of the existing building and the development of low income housing units.
The 28th Street Apartments will also house and help mentally disabled adults and emancipated foster kids. Some of these foster kids were included in the ceremony, and they are to receive construction jobs at the site.
The project is a partnership of Clifford Beers Housing and the Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD).
The apartments are scheduled for completion in the summer of 2012.
