IHOP in 2006 launched National Pancake Day in order to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network charity, as well as local charities around the United States. Since 2006, IHOP has raised $5.35 million for the Children’s Miracle Network, and raised more than $2.1 million last year. They have given away more than 10.1 million pancakes since its inception.
The Hollywood IHOP on Sunset Boulevard was packed today with residents excited about the deal. Miss America Teresa Scanlan, who is the goodwill ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network’s hospitals, was on hand to flip pancakes for the good cause.
Scanlan said, “I like them plain with butter and syrup. I like blueberry pancakes, I like chocolate pancakes, I just like pancakes.”
IHOP hopes to beat last year’s record and raise $2.3 million for their charities.
While the official National Pancake day might be new this decade, Fat Tuesday and pancake eating dates back several centuries. During Lent, the English were not allowed to eat dairy products, and therefore pancakes were made to use up the rest of the supplies, including eggs, milk, and butter.
National Pancake Day continues at IHOP until 10 p.m. Tuesday night.
