Los Angeles officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today for a new set of playground equipment in Montecito Heights. The equipment is just the start of the area’s $750,000 park improvement project.

The project’s budget will be used to create a new park, as well as improve irrigation and security throughout the park area.
Groundbreaking for the project began in October 2010.
City officials said improving parks is a key to improving the surrounding community.
“Parks are an integral part of keeping our kids away from gangs and having them do something positive,” said LA City councilman Jose Huizar.
Student Leilani Jimenez called the new playground “peaceful.”
“Under the trees it’s nice and relaxing,” Jimenez said.
Arroyo Seco resident Jenna Rose said she is excited to have a park near where she and her son live.
“He can hopefully meet more kids in the neighborhood,” Rose said.
