Councilman Ed Reyes and the LAPD announced a $50,000 reward Thursday for information leading to the arrests of the attackers of 17-year-old Jonathan Val. The announcement took place at the crime scene in Highland Park.

Val was gunned down April 28, 2010 by three men in a vehicle as he was standing on a sidewalk at 390 North Avenue 57, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Police said it was “for no apparent reason.” Reports say the front passenger in the vehicle fired several shots.

Val was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Reyes called the people responsible for Val’s death cowards and said the community wasn’t safe until they were caught.

“These incidences will continue to happen as long as they feel they can get away with it,” Reyes said.

Madeline Rivera, the victim’s mother, said her son was a good kid that had dreams of finishing school.

“The only thing I want is justice,” Rivera said. “Teenagers need to think, go to school, and do better. Not kill other teenagers.”

Rivera said her son wasn’t a gang member, but was involved with a local church and an organization called Peace Warriors, which aimed at ending gang violence.

Authorities believe that the suspects may have been part of a local Highland Park gang. They hope the reward will help bring justice and peace for the family and the community.
