Some Bell residents said they participated in the election to honor the memory of the late Miguel Sanchez.

Sanchez passed away Friday unexpectedly from unknown causes. He was campaigning to take the seat of Councilman Luiz Artiga and came in second for the spot with 683 votes.

Sanchez befriended Raul Galindo 10 years ago. Because of Sanchez’s encouragement, Galindo is now planning to go to culinary school and open a restaurant in Bell. He said he will call the restaurant “Consuela’s Kitchen,” because that’s the name Sanchez picked.

Galindo said Sanchez never wanted people to “look at him.” Instead, Galindo said, he wanted people to look at what he’s done for the community.

“He said, ‘This is my time. This is my chance. And I’m going to make something of it for my community and my people,’’ Galindo said.

18-year Bell resident Romeo Carbosa said he didn’t know Sanchez personally, but admired his concern for the city’s wellbeing.

“He wanted the best for Bell,” said Carbosa.
