An emergency law to allow a new Bell City Council to be seated passed the Assembly unanimously on Monday. The law is now awaiting Governor Jerry Brown’s signature.
The law passed the state Senate unanimously on Thursday.
According to Pedro Carrillo, Bell’s interim chief administrative officer, the city clerk will likely swear in the new council members by the end of April.
Superior Court Judge Henry Hall ordered three council members to stay 100 feet away from City Hall, leaving Bell without a City Council to certify the results of the March 8 election.
This bill allows the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to confirm the election.
Many of these new council members- including a social worker, retired baker, small business owner, and two others- started careers in politics only after the Bell corruption scandal broke.
