World Water Day

PETA representatives were on hand in Hollywood to raise awareness on World Water Day

Tuesday marked World Water Day, and the international celebration made its way to the streets of Hollywood.

Representatives from PETA were on hand today at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Ivar Avenue to encourage people to become vegans. In a stunt that attracted fairly extensive crowds, two women showered behind a banner that read “Clean Your Conscience: Go Vegan! 1 pound of meat equals 6 months of showers.”

“A lot of people want to help the environment but maybe don’t have the money to buy an expensive hybrid car, and you don’t have to,” said Lindsay Rajt of PETA. “In fact, researchers at the University of Chicago found that you actually do more to combat global climate change by switching over from a standard American diet to a vegan diet than you would if you swapped out your standard American car for a hybrid vehicle.”

PETA's Lindsay Rajt talks about how people can help conserve water by becoming vegans.

World Water Day is celebrated in several locations across the world. This year’s theme is “Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge,” with the goal of prompting governments, organizations, and people to focus on improving urban water management.

3.3 billion people live in cities. This is the first time ever that the majority of people live in urban areas.

The overall purpose of World Water Day 2011 is to bring awareness to issues such as rapid urban population growth, industrialization, climate change, and natural disasters- all of which can have huge impacts on urban water systems.
