On Tuesday afternoon, the intersection of First Street and Grand Avenue in downtown LA will formally be called Fleischmann Square. The square is being renamed in honor of the late Ernest Fleischmann, the longtime managing director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and general director of the Hollywood Bowl.
On Tuesday night, a tribute concert will be held at 8 p.m. at the Disney Concert Hall. The concert will feature conductor laureate Esa Pekka Salonen and composer Pierre Boulez.
Fleischmann spent 29 years working with the LA Philharmonic. He is known for expanding the Philharmonic’s activities at the Hollywood Bowl, in the Los Angeles Music Center, on national and international tours and on radio and television.
This isn’t the first time Fleischmann is being honored for his contributions to the classical music scene. In 1998, the city of Los Angeles declared Fleischmann its “First Living Cultural Treasure.”
Fleischmann died on June 13, 2010, at the age of 85 after a long illness.
