Metro launched first tests for Expo light rail line

Metro is urging the public to "watch for trains and be safe" as it begins testing the Expo Line

Los Angeles Metro debuted its new Expo light rail line Monday as it sent the train on its first test run.

Part of the fifteen-mile line will run between Downtown L.A. and Culver City along Exposition Boulevard. Metro workers monitored the track for Monday’s low-speed test run.

The initial testing was from 23rd Street Station near USC.

The line intersects a crosswalk next to USC, but students who walk in the area regularly said they are not concerned about their safety.

“I’m sure they’re going to have their safety standards pretty high. I have to cross a busy street anyway. I’m sure as long as you look both ways, you’ll be okay,” USC student Mike Alvarez said.

USC Transportation sent out an e-mail Monday advising students like Alvarez who walk along Exposition to follow safety tips from Metro. Metro’s safety tips include obeying warning signs and traffic signals when crossing the tracks, always looking both ways before crossing any street, never walking on the railroad tracks, watching for trains from both directions and not jaywalking across the tracks.

Metro said it expects to energize the power system in late April and begin full train testing for a few months.

No official date for the start of passenger service has been announced, but the target date is Nov. 15, 2011. Completion to Culver City may not happen until early 2012.
