Southwest Airlines canceled 70 flights nationwide on Monday as inspections on Southwest’s Boeing 737-300s continue.
A Southwest airplane developed a hole in its fuselage during a flight Friday. Cracks were also found in several other planes of the same model. This prompted Southwest to put their fleet of Boeing 737-300s out of service, which resulted in the cancellation of about 600 flights.
Monday’s cancellations included 10 LAX flights.
Officials said at least 20 planes passed the inspections and were put back in service.
Southwest Flight 1588 bound for San Diego from Oakland International Airport was diverted to LAX on Sunday night after crew members said they noticed an electrical smell, according to a Southwest spokeswoman.
The plane was the same model as the one involved in Friday’s diverted flight, a Boeing 737-300, but a Southwest spokesperson said the two problems were unrelated.
The 142 passengers on Sunday’s flight boarded a newer model of the Boeing 737-300 for the flight from LAX to San Diego.
Southwest announced this afternoon that it plans to resume normal flight operations tomorrow after completing inspections on most of its Boeing 737-300 planes.
