President Obama declares tsunami damage to California coastline a disaster

The president's announcement could save the state up to $25 million in costs

Santa Monica beaches and the pier were closed March 11 because of tsunami advisories.

President Obama signed a declaration on Monday calling the damage from the tsunami that hit California’s coast on March 11 a disaster.

California officials estimated the tsunami caused by waves from the 9.0 earthquake in Japan resulted in more than $48 million in damages, primarily to harbors in Crescent City and Santa Cruz.

The declaration will allow state, local governments and non-profit organizations to seek federal funding for emergency repair work.

California Emergency Management officials said it could save the state up to $25 million in costs.

Obama signed the declaration in response to California’s request for federal help in relief efforts.
