After five years anchoring the CBS Evening News, Katie Couric announced Tuesday that she will be leaving the network.

Couric made history by becoming the first solo female primetime anchor for a U.S. network news show.

She officially told the news to People.com and said, “I’m really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we’ve been able to do in the past five years.”

Couric moved to CBS in 2006 after 15 years as co-host of NBC’s “Today.” She did not clarify whether she was leaving CBS altogether or when her departure would become effective.

While at CBS, Couric contributed to “60 Minutes” and the “CBS Sunday Morning” broadcast.

Couric won many prestigious awards and will always be known for her infamous interview with Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin in 2008. However, Couric never managed to lift the “CBS Evening News” out of third place in the ratings war with rivals ABC and NBC networks.

CBS has not decided who will fill in for Couric at the “Evening News” desk.
