Traffic congestion got you down? Once the latest I-5 freeway project is complete your woes might not be as bad.

Caltrans broke ground on a $57.8 million freeway project Wednesday which will create a new stretch of lanes for high occupancy vehicles.

The new addition of 5.4 miles of bus and carpool lanes will be added between Ventura Freeway and Magnolia Boulevard on the Golden State Freeway.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2014.

High occupancy vehicle lanes help reduce traffic reduction during rush hour. Los Angeles County highways currently have 514 miles of high occupancy vehicle lanes which make up 36 percent of the states HOV lanes.

Caltrans has additional projects under construction on the I-5 including HOV lanes between the Ronald Reagan and Hollywood freeways.

Funding for the project comes from sales tax revenue.
