LAPD tells ATVN it is investigating a shooting that occurred near 29th and Hoover, in the middle of one of USC’s densest residential neighborhoods. DPS is yet to issue a Trojan Alert on the incident.
Students reported hearing a series of four to seven shots just after midnight, in a drive-by shooting.
“I think it was seven shots,” said USC student Jacob Copman, who was at the corner of 29th and Orchard — about 500 feet away from the scene — when the shots were fired.
“There were probably 20 [people],” he recalled about the chaos immediately following the gunshots. “There were people leaving the scene in all different directions.”
LAPD said the victim, a young non-USC student named Devionte Harrell, was shot by a gunman in the stomach from a Honda Accord. Harrell was rushed to a hospital and was in stable condition this morning.
No immediate arrests have made in the case. As of 1:09 a.m. most of the police cars had left the scene.
DPS reported that the man who was shot was not a USC student.
“We understand that it did not involve a USC student,” a DPS official said. “LAPD is investigating the shooting.”
Copman said the man who was shot bled onto the sidewalk on 29th.
“It’s on the sidewalk … You can actually see the blood spots.”
Police arrived at the scene just seconds after the disturbance, and helicopters began circling overhead with searchlights on the area surrounding USC.
Copman told ATVN the police arrived so quickly because three LAPD cars were already near the scene with car headlights off.
“There were three cop cars all with their lights off cruising by before the shooting happened,” said Copman. “The fact that it was literally 30 seconds from the shooting would suggest they were looking for something.”
LAPD said “officers are investigating and it is being contained.”
“[We heard] gunshots and then people screaming,” a student in a nearby apartment complex told ATVN.
“My parents picked me up from Century and heard gunshots,” one student said via Facebook.
The shots were first reported at 12:21 a.m. from a house at 1162 W. 29th Street, according to police. Harrell allegedly began running and was shot near 1138 W. 29th, directly in front of USC student apartments.
Students who live in the area say that white house often held non-USC parties and that they were often curious about why the house seemed to have a privately hired security guard at the entrance on a regular basis.
The Daily Trojan reported that students at a nearby party heard arguing before they heard the gunshots.
Other students said the gunshots sounded tinny, similar to the sound of a cap gun, but said they became alarmed when they heard screams immediately after.
