Baseball Team Swept
The visiting Cal Golden Bears swept the USC baseball team this weekend at Dedeaux Field, dropping the Trojans into last place in the Pac-10 conference.
In Sunday’s series finale, Cal starting pitcher Dixon Anderson gave up two runs in seven innings as the Golden Bears beat USC 4-3.
Cal (20-10, 6-3) took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth before USC (15-17, 2-7) staged a late rally. RBI singles by Matt Foat and Brando Garcia brought the Trojans to within one, but Matt Hart struck out swinging and Mike O’Neill flied to center to end the threat.
On Saturday, Cal rolled to a 7-1 afternoon win. The top of the fifth inning proved decisive, as Cal scored three unearned runs to break what was a scoreless tie up to that point. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, USC starter Ben Mount got Jimmy Bosco to ground into what seemed to be a routine put out.
The ball took a bad hop, however, and second baseman Adam Landecker was unable to make the play. Mitch Delfino then singled and two runs came home on Marcus Semien’s double. Semien eventually scored the third run of the inning on a pass ball.
Friday’s series opener was a wild one, with the Bears claiming a 16-9 victory. The teams combined for 32 hits in a game that lasted nearly three and a half hours.
The Trojans were sloppy defensively throughout, committing a season-high six errors. Cal scored in each of the first six frames and even five USC runs in the bottom of the seventh couldn’t make a game of it.
USC returns to action this week on the road as they take on No. 1 Arizona State in a three-game series.
